BMW Nomenclature Guide

BMW’s naming system is often three digits followed by one or two letters.


Here’s how to read them:

Digits

  • First digit: Vehicle Series (3, 5, 7, etc.)
  • Next two digits: Traditionally engine displacement in cubic centimeters ÷ 100
    (There are exceptions on modern turbocharged models.)

  • A – Automatic transmission
  • C – Coupe (older models)
  • c – Cabriolet
  • d – Diesel
  • e – Eta (efficiency)
  • g – CNG / natural gas
  • h – Hydrogen
  • i – Fuel injected
  • L – Long wheelbase
  • s – Sport / 2-door (on some older models)
  • sDrive – Rear-wheel drive
  • T – Touring (wagon)
  • Ti – 3 Series hatchback
  • x / xDrive – All-wheel drive
